Unrealised Project: Damián Ortega, 2008–09

Project Overview
Damián Ortega is a member of a group of South American artists who were gaining prominence after 2000. He shows with an excellent Mexican gallery called kurimanzutto. He came to Sydney in 2008 for a site visit, and after looking at a number of locations, we agreed to try to do a project on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. He suggested large spheres made out of aerated bricks that were inspired by Jørn Utzon’s original concept for the segmented spheres which make up the sails of the Opera House. These would be built in a random pattern on the forecourt. Damian proposed it as a permanent sculpture and that brought too many complications, such as official permissions, and the project stalled.
