Unrealised Project: James Turrell, late 1980s

Project Overview
I admired James Turrell’s works, particularly the Sky Rooms, which I saw at the original P.S.1 and in the annexe of the Museum of Modern Art in LA. I met him in New York and invited him to do a Sky Room in Sydney, which would have been a permanent work. The site that I had in mind was the Clock Tower building in The Rocks. He was going to come on a site visit to Sydney, and one of the enticing aspects for his visit was the fact that he loved gliding, and he had heard there were good conditions for gliding in Australia. At this time he received a commission for a large work in Ireland and his involvement in that precluded his trip to Australia. Subsequently he has created two Sky Rooms in Australia—Within Without at the NGA (2010) and Amarna at MONA (2015).
